Job Description:

We are seeking a Sr. Specialist, Manufacturing Engineer (Compression Molding) to work at our new state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) in Huntsville, AL , which will be our inert manufacturing facility for fabrication and assembly of composite rocket motor hardware.

The Sr. Specialist, Manufacturing Engineer (Compression Molding) is a senior professional with strong knowledge of job area and broad knowledge of project management. They manage complex projects or processes with general oversight. They communicate within and outside of their own function to gain cooperation on operational processes, practices, and procedures. They make moderate to substantial improvements to systems and processes and contributes to achievement of departmental goals and operating plans with direct impact on the departmental results.

This is a dynamic team that requires motivated, self-starting individuals with hands-on experience. Manufacturing Engineers lead process management activities and create associated documentation for their assigned processes. They must be able to follow company procedures and requirements for the manufacture of advanced, man-rated, and high value aerospace hardware.

Essential Functions:

\n
• Provide technical expertise on compression molding operations using rubber, molding compounds, and/or prepreg.
\n
• Champion process improvement projects using Lean Manufacturing methodologies.
\n
• Train and mentor less experienced engineers.
\n
• Lead transition efforts for programs moving from other L3Harris facilities to Huntsville.
\n
• Lead qualifications efforts for new pieces of equipment.
\n
• Plan, develop, initiate and maintain processes for the fabrication of advanced composite parts.
\n
• Create detailed work instructions, procedures, PFMEAs, and JSAs that meet design, process, quality, safety, and environmental requirements.
\n
• Provide technical guidance and/or training to shop floor, design and management teams.
\n
• Analyze engineering drawings and specifications in support of developing robust and advanced part and tooling designs.
\n
• Interface with all related support groups for processes to ensure accuracy, control and safety of the personnel and quality of the hardware.
\n
• Perform investigations of nonconforming hardware and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
\n
• Present fabrication processes at customer readiness reviews and present process changes to customers at change board meetings.
\n
• Less than 5% travel may be required to support suppliers or other manufacturing sites.
\n
• Occasional off-shift and weekend work required to support manufacturing schedules.
\n
• Other duties as assigned.
\n
• Ability to obtain US Security Clearence.
\n

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant engineering experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related engineering experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related engineering experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

\n
• Compression molding experience using rubber, molding compounds, and/or prepreg.
\n
• Experience operating and programming hydraulic presses (up acting, down acting, shuttle presses, and/or vacuum presses).
\n
• Surface preparation for primary substrates to bond rubber or composite is strongly desired.
\n
• Hand layup and cure of insulation, composite and/or other materials is preferred.
\n
• Experience writing specifications for new pieces of equipment.
\n
• Strong GD&T background supporting part validation.
\n
• CAD modeling experience.
\n
• Experience with operation of robots, presses, ovens, winders, CNC machines, cutting tables and/or autoclaves.
\n
• Strong cross-functional communication skills.
\n
• Strong problem-solving skills.
\n
• Adaptable to a changing work environment.
\n
